Vista Windows Update Error: “The page failed to load”

Problem: When you start Windows Update in Vista you’ll get a white blank page with an error message saying that “The page failed to load” (See Screenshot).

Solution:

  1. Open MyColors (A Stardock Product)
  2. On the left pane select “Windows Vista Aero” to temporarily disable MyColors Theme functionality.
  3. Do Windows Update again

You are having trouble installing Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892).

To resolve this issue, do the following:

1. Go to Run, type regedit, and click ok, or press Enter.

2. In Regedit, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup]
(Note that if you have multiple instances of MSSQL installed, the reg key might be different for you)

3. find the “Resume” REG_DWORD, and change its decimal value from 1, to 0.

4. Install the update, and restart the machine.

5. Run Windows Update again.

VISTA System Restore Error: Cannot create a file that already exists (0x800700B7) (Fixed)

Symptom(s): When creating a restore point and/or enabling/disabling System Restore in Vista you were prompted with the following error message: “Cannot create a file that already exists (0x800700B7)”

 

Solution:

Delete the registry key “SR” under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows\SystemRestore\

Note: Doing this will remove any previous restore point you have created.

Problem: Windows Update keeps showing “Update for Windows XP (KB967715).”

Possible Workaround:

1) Download Update for Windows XP (KB967715)

2) Uninstall “Roxio DLA”

3) Reboot in Safe Mode and manually install Update for Windows XP (KB967715).

4) Reboot to Normal Mode and try Windows Update.

Problem: You were unable to select any screensaver because it is disable or grayed out.

Solution:

1. Open the registry editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to the following registry path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

2.  Find the entry SCRNSAVE.EXE and ScreenSaveActive, delete those two keys.

3. Close the registry editor and try to change your screensaver again.

Problem:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430) keeps on showing in Windows Update

 

Solution:

1. Look for msxml4.dll (usually found in c:\windows\system32) and rename it to msxml4.old

 2. Download and install the installer here -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=96a4413c-5261-4f69-83d0-932c430abd14&displaylang=en

 3. Run Windows Update again.
